New Worm Slams Home The Need For Comprehensive Defense
Against Today's Threats Slammer, the latest high-risk worm to
threaten businesses worldwide, highlights the need for comprehensive
protection that extends beyond the 'traditional' anti-virus
solutions of yesterday. Like CodeRed before it, Slammer uses a
system vulnerability to attack victim machines via a buffer overflow
— a patch for this vulnerability has been available for more than
six months. Like CodeRed, Slammer is a 'fileless' worm that exists
only in memory. Unlike CodeRed, Slammer targets SQL servers rather
than web servers. Although Slammer does not damage data, the volume
of traffic generated by this fast-moving worm has been enough to
debilitate corporate networks and slow the Internet. For full
details on McAfee's COMPREHENSIVE solution to the SQLSlammer worm,

to provide customers with the tools they need to battle spam,
Network Associates, Inc. has announced the acquisition of Deersoft,
Inc., a leading provider of anti-spam solutions. The Deersoft
acquisition is the first in a series of investments Network
Associates is making in spam and content filtering technologies.
Under the terms of the deal, Network Associates has acquired all

e-mail server, and desktop for enterprise customers and will be

product McAfee SpamKiller™. For more information please visit http://www.mcafeeb2b.com/other/jump/deersoft.asp.

Measure Your Level of Protection With McAfee
ThreatScan The latest ThreatScan module updates, published on
15 January, make it even easier to manage your network environment
with two NEW FEATURES. The first is detection for Nokia Hotsynch
software, letting you identify those machines which provide a
network connection for a Nokia device. The second is detection for a
range of anti-virus products — including McAfee, Symantec, Trend,
F-Secure, Sophos, Panda, Kaspersky, and Norman anti-virus products.
Using the power of ePolicy Orchestrator reports, you get an
at-a-glance picture of those machines in the corporate network on
which anti-virus software is installed. You can't manage what you
can't measure! ThreatScan lets you measure your level of protection
across the enterprise. ThreatScan module updates — available for
ThreatScan 2.0 and ThreatScan 2.1 — are available at ftp://ftp.nai.com/pub/security/tsc20/updates/winnt.
For more information on ThreatScan, please visit http://www.mcafeeb2b.com/products/threatscan/default.asp.

Tip of the Month — It's Time To Report On 21
January 2003, Simon Vallor, a UK-based virus writer, was sentenced
to two year's imprisonment after pleading guilty to three counts of
releasing a computer virus. Such prosecutions are reliant on police
being able to provide evidence of infection — something that's
possible only with effective virus incident reporting. Of course,
bringing virus writers to book is only one of the benefits of such
reports. As well as finding out about virus 'hot-spots', you also
get to know about product and update distribution across your
organisation. McAfee VirusScan Online Business Edition includes
graphical reports — virus and anti-virus — showing you where the
viruses are being stopped and letting you see at-a-glance the
outbreak-readiness of machines within your enterprise with zero
administration!
